Pasco County Fire Rescue, through the department’s Rescue division provides advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical services (EMS) county wide including all of the municipalities within the county. At a minimum, 23 patient transport capable rescue units provide services to the 740 square miles of Pasco County through geographical deployment at Fire Rescue’s 23 career fire stations. Each ALS rescue unit is staffed with two cross-trained certified firefighters who both are also certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and at minimum one of them as a Paramedic.
In 2016 Pasco County Fire Rescue responded to 59,479 EMS related calls for service. Fire Rescue responds to critical medical calls with an ALS capable fire engine and an ALS transporting Rescue Unit. Both trucks have 12 lead heart monitors capable of transmitting the resulting EKG to the hospital prior to the patient’s arrival at the emergency room. This transmitting capability, coupled with the paramedic’s training in heart attack (STEMI) recognition, has enabled Pasco County Fire Rescue to receive the American Heart Association’s Mission Lifeline Recognition each year since 2014.
